Life as a professional runner

Ever wondered what the life of a professional athlete is like?

Then meet Christopher Lukezic and read about his experiences as he prepares for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

30 great runs in London

Bored of running the same old route week in and week out?

Altering your route is one of the very best ways to not only relieve boredom but also a great way to find out more about where you live.

If you live in London or find yourself there for a few days and are able to fit in run or two you might be interested in Chris Downham’s lovely book called 30 Great Runs in London. Thoroughly researched it provides a fantastic set of routes from 3-10 miles across all parts of the capital, with details of how to get their by public transport as well as the type of terrain and profile.

Changing where you run can help you reconnect with one of the main reasons you do it. You get to explore the beautiful outdoors.

Kent Coastal Half-Marathon

The Kent Coastal Half-Marathon is a very well organised event. Taking place between Margate and Broadstairs the course takes in much of the Viking coast and though described as undulating it is quite hilly in parts, though this doesn’t detract from what is a very enjoyable race.

The 9.30am start makes it quite a challenge to reach by public transport if you do not live locally. So I stayed at the excellent Chislet Court Farm located between Canterbury and Margate the night before.

Both race and accommodation are highly recommended.

Folkestone Half-Marathon

The Folkstone Half-Marathon is an excellent and well organised race and a welcome addition to the racing calendar.

Many other runners think so too.

The scenic and relatively flat course takes you along the coast from Folkestone to Hythe and back, but make sure you save some energy for the sting in the tale, a pretty steep hill in the last mile. Just about leaves you with enough time to rally yourself for a sprint finish along the clifftop outside the Grand Hotel

I made a weekend of it and stayed as Alkham Court – a superb award winning B&B just a few miles outside the town with beautiful views over the Kent Downs.

Both race and accommodation are highly recommended.
